Ages 7 to 11

It’s time for a nice cuppa:

• You always boil a full kettle even though you only need a little bit. Grr, now you have too much!
• You only boil the cupful that you need. If everybody did the same for just one day, there’d be enough energy left over to light every street lamp in the UK the next night!¹

When you’ve finished using your computer:

• You leave the screensaver on standby in case you go back to it in a few hours’ time. Oops, it’s still on days later!
• You turn it off at the wall. Some appliances on standby use 40–70% of the energy they use when switched on!²

When you’re washing your clothes:

• You stick them in the machine at 50 degrees. Then wonder why they came out shrunken to Barbie size, while your family electricity bill is enormous!
• You never wash anything at over 40 degrees (that way you’ll use a third less electricity per wash).²

Travelling to school:

• You always get driven there and back, even though it’s just round the corner. It’s the perfect snoozing window!
• You get fit by walking in with your mates or car-share with friends to help the environment (at 8.15am, one in five cars clogging up city roads is taking children to school. Twice as many kids are being driven to school as 20 years ago).¹

It’s time to clean your teeth:

• You leave the tap running while you chat to your bro/sis, make gurgling sounds or stare at your beautiful mush in the mirror.
• You just use short bursts of water to rinse your toothbrush, which wastes 80% less water.¹
