What is energy?

lightbulbEnergy is an essential part of our daily lives. Nothing happens without energy. We depend on it in hundreds of different ways. Our bodies need energy to move and our computers, mobile phones and cars need energy to work.

We use energy every day to keep warm, light rooms at night, cook our food and travel from A to B. How would you look at this website without the energy that powers your computer?

CarThe strangest thing about energy is that you can't make it or get rid of it; you can only change it from one type of energy into another.

For example, a lightbulb changes electrical energy into light and heat energy.

A car changes chemical energy into movement energy.

This wind-up toy is not just "monkeying around" – it is using different types of energy to work. Click on the big key on its back to find out more.
